What is Psoriasis? Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that affects approximately 4% of Americans aged 12 years and older. It is characterized by red patches covered with white scaly plaques. These lesions may itch or burn, and they often appear in areas where friction occurs.

There are many treatments out there for treating psoriasis, including medications, topical creams, and phototherapy. But what if we told you that these treatments don’t work?

Types of psoriasis
There are three types of psoriasis: plaque-type, guttate, and pustular. Plaque type psoriasis is the most common form of the disease and is characterized by small red, raised, dry patches covered with silvery scales.
Guttate psoriasis presents as larger, round, flat, and red patches covered with silvery scale. Pustular psoriasis involves painful fluid-filled blisters.
The cause of psoriasis is unknown. Genetic factors, environmental factors, immunologic dysfunction, and infection have been suggested as potential triggers for the onset of psoriasis. However, none of these theories have been proven.
Researchers believe that psoriasis results from a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and immunologic dysregulation.
Treatments for psoriasis vary depending on the type of psoriasis, severity, location, and personal preferences.
Topical treatments, such as creams, ointments, and lotions, are commonly used to control symptoms and prevent outbreaks. Topicals generally work best when applied early in the course of the disease. Systemic treatments, including oral medicines and phototherapy, are sometimes prescribed if topical treatment fails to help.
Some therapies involve the use of ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) to stimulate the immune system’s natural defenses. Others involve the application of drugs that block certain chemicals involved in inflammation. Still others attempt to alter the balance between T cells — some of which produce signals that promote inflammation and others that limit it — using monoclonal antibodies. In rare cases, psoriasis may require removal of affected skin for cosmetic reasons.
Possible home remedies for psoriasis include:-
1. Lemon and honey remedy
Mix lemon juice and honey and apply it on the affected area regularly. This mixture helps reduce inflammation in the body and heals wounds faster.
2. Aloe Vera gel
Aloe vera gel comes in handy in treating various skin problems. It reduces inflammation and relieves pain associated with psoriasis. You can use aloe vera gel directly on the affected area.
However, if the area hurts while applying the solution, then you can mix some water with aloe vera gel and apply it. After 15 minutes, rinse off the area thoroughly with warm water. Repeat this twice daily.
3. Vitamin E oil
It contains antioxidants that help heal the damaged cells of the skin. Apply vitamin E oil directly on the affected area and leave it on for about 20 minutes before washing off.
Vinegar helps in removing dead skin cells from the affected area along with reducing inflammation. Make a paste of vinegar and cold milk and apply it on the skin. Rinse after half an hour and repeat two times daily.
Yogurt is rich in lactic acid, which is an anti-inflammatory agent. Soak cotton balls in yogurt overnight and apply them on the affected areas of the skin. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. Repeat this thrice weekly.
6. Castor Oil
Castor oil possesses antiseptic properties, making it effective in treating psoriasis. Toothpaste works well in combination with castor oil for better results. Place 1 teaspoon of toothpaste and 2 drops of castor oil in a glass of hot milk. Stir well and drink once daily.
Clove garlic is known to have antibiotic qualities. It helps fight infections and keeps the blood vessels open. Use raw cloves of freshly crushed garlic mixed in equal amounts of olive oil and aloe vera gel to prepare a paste. Massage this paste for 10 minutes and scrub gently. Wash the area with plain water. Repeat this thrrice weekly.
Honey is rich in fructose and glucose. These substances help remove dead skin cells from the skin. Soak cotton balls with honey overnight and clean the area with them in the morning. Repeat this thrice a week.
9. Fenugreek seeds
Also know as fenu-grass, fenugreek seeds can be used to relieve itching caused by psoriasis. Crush 3 tablespoons of the seeds and place them in a bowl. Add few teaspoons of water and cover the bowl with a lid. Allow it to ferment overnight; strain out the liquid and add it to a fresh jar of honey to make a smooth paste.
Store the remaining seeds in airtight container away from sunlight.Apply this paste on the affected area daily.
10. Potato flour
A mixture of potato flour and wheat flour can work wonders for psoriasis. Blend ¼ cup each of both flours and store it in an airtight container until further use. When needed, mix the flour with enough water to make a thin paste. Apply this on the affected area and allow it to dry. Scrub it off after 5 minutes. Do this once daily.
11. Olive oil
Olive oil helps get rid of toxins from the body and is a good moisturizer. In addition, it enhances circulation and promotes cell regeneration. To prevent yourself from getting oily, mix a tablespoon of olive oil with 1/2 gallon of boiling water. Let it cool completely and then pour it through a coffee filter. Keep it ready and apply it to the affected area.
12. Cucumber slices
Slice cucumbers thinly and dip them in saltwater. Pat dry and apply them on the skin. Cover the area with plastic wrap and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then rinse the area with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
